My Students

My music students come from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Eighty-three percent of the students come from low-income families and rely on our high school to provide them with all their educational and learning experiences. Our four-year music program provides training, music experiences, and opportunities for self-expression that would not otherwise be available to them.

My students are incredibly talented, are very determined to develop as musicians, and seek to make the world a better place through their artistry.

Even through we are learning virtually, I continue to see improvement in their musical abilities. This is obviously the result of their hard work and dedication. They continue to be inspiring to teach! Your contributions will enable us to collaborate with a professional artist to create our next virtual music project. This project will be in response to the traumas Chicago residents face each day, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

My Project

Last spring, my students created a trauma-responsive project featuring multiple art-forms and original music which has now been shared by the Illinois Lt. Governor, Chicago's Mayor, and many other influential individuals and institutions. My students are overwhelmed by the response to their message of hope!

My students are eager to create another trauma-responsive video, this time focusing on mental illness caused by many forms of trauma, including racial trauma.

Artist Sharon Irving (semi-finalist of Season 10 of America's Got Talent and Chicago native) has enthusiastically agreed to coach us through the artistic process of turning our lived experiences into an original, professional music track. Sharon will help integrate the student's ideas together with her own to create a final music track. Our dance department will then choreograph a piece to film as part of the final video.

Trauma, Healing, and Music Session 1: Introductions and Refining the Message

-Sharon Irving will share her journey and responses to trauma through her art-forms and students will be given space to share their stories.

-Sharon Irving will work with students to choose trauma-responsive messages to send through this piece at this time.

Trauma, Healing, and Music Session 2: Advanced Song-Writing

-Sharon Irving teaches Song-Writing workshop related to our Trauma-Responsive piece “The Cave.”

-Students and Sharon meet to talk through additional musical form, harmonies, beats and lyric ideas.

Trauma, Healing, and Music Session 3: Recording with Purpose

-Sharon and students finalize all elements of “The Cave” and make a plan for creating the scratch track for video/audio recording.

-Sharon coaches students on best practices for audio and video recording, as well as developing personal artist brands.

Finally, Sharon will work with the music instructors to finalize and record her contributions to the music track and video.
