Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My middle school science students are part of a Dual Language program in Ohio. Many of my students are learning English as a second language and therefore struggle to understand the academic language used within the textbooks. However, their curiosity about the world and their ability to absorb information is amazing! A great researched-based strategy that will help ensure my students' success is to provide as many hands-on activities and visuals as possible. This allows them to explore topics in ways other than traditional textbooks. Plus, hands-on is what science is all about! My students love to learn and work very well in small group settings.
It is pure joy to see their eyes light up when they have their ah-ha moment!
My hope is that they continue their love for science and never stop questioning how things work.
My Project
In science, the best way to learn is from a hands-on approach! These kits will expose students to a variety of science fields, including physical science, Earth science, and life science. Topics are broken down into small, relatable chunks, allowing them to explore in a small group setting. Students will gain some prior knowledge before going into the specifics of the textbook, increasing their chance of understanding. These kits will be especially useful to students who find the academic vocabulary of the grade level textbook challenging to understand. Let's give them the boost that they need to experience success!
