Help me give my students clay to use in our Arts Integration project to learn basics of clay origin and uses and model letters to create our own Italian alphabet!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Middle school students are such an amazing and exciting group to work with. They're curious and energetic, have many different abilities, interests and goals. They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions.
Our school staff is doing a great job trying to incorporate the ARTS in our curriculum as part of the Arts Integration project promoted by Prince George's County Public Schools.
I aim to pass this passion for arts, and show my students how much Art is a part of their life and how much Art can do for them, even when learning such a different subject as Italian language!
My Project
As part of our Arts Integration program I want my students to learn more about clay, starting with some basics of visual arts (line, shape, form, texture), learning some of the uses of clay, how to use it (coil, slab, pinch, pot) and its origins. We will also learn about Dave the Potter, how Government created conditions in which African-Americans were enslaved and denied access to, among other things, education. I'll explain why Dave the Potter’s work was important in the past and why it is important now in the present.
The CLAY will be the protagonist together with their unique creativity and imagination.
After learning a little history, we will get into using clay to create basic forms and familiarize ourselves with it. Finally the students will create letters for the Italian alphabet to be displayed in the classroom during the school the year.
