Teaching art in a rural setting to 475 students. I would like to introduce to my fourth and fifth grade classes a unit on weaving. My students have never had this opportunity. This activity will allow young children to experience a traditional craft that has been practiced around the world for centuries. Teaching the process of weaving will help their fine motor skills and instill in the student the appreciation of weaving as an art form. This project will involve 88 fourth graders and 60 fifth graders. Items needed to make this happen are 8 basket kits and 4 packs of jumbo pipe cleaners,30 weaving needles,yarn and cardboard looms. Weaving terms will be taught and the student will understand how many cultures use weaving in their daily lives.
