This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a lively group of middle school students who mostly come from low-income households. Several are language learners who love to talk! While the majority of my students enjoy reading, very few are able to purchase books from bookstores. They would love to increase the size of the classroom library. They especially love books which combine drawings and writing such as Timmy Failure, Nate the Great, and Captain Underpants. Greek myths retold are always a favorite as well. Seeing their excitement when I say they can take home a book they picked out is priceless!

My Project

I am always thrilled to see how much my students love choosing their independent reading books and thankfully, our schedule allows time for reading every day. While I cherish the independent reading experience, I believe that my students would also be positively affected by reading a class book together. I have found that the right book with the right group can provide a richness only experienced from the communal reading of the the same text.

The Outsiders is always a favorite, no matter the background of the student.

The themes are relatable; the characters memorable. Do we ever forget Johnny’s last words: “‘Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold . . .’”?
