My students live in Brooklyn, NY. Most of them are from single-parent homes, or homes where the parents work several jobs, so my students rely heavily on the help they receive at school.
My students are eager to learn-without exception and when they receive support from teachers, they pay it back ten-fold with success!.
But they lack the background and resources they need to thrive in today's academic environment.
My students like informal learning experiences because it feels less restrictive to them.
Most of my students are English Language Learners or Special Education, or both.
My Project
Our end-of-year projects will feature art and more art. Students will use the fabrics, modeling clay, dowel rods, googly eyes, and other materials to transform stories into puppet theater performances. Students will work together to bring their favorite stories of the school year to life.
What better way to celebrate the end of a school year than with confidence-building performances that include handmade puppets and art?
We will transform exciting stories into exciting performances with the help of these materials, bringing a sense of excitement about learning into the classroom. Through the art of puppets, I hope my struggling readers will find a different way to engage with reading, maybe even fall in love with it.
