The fundamental purpose and goal of First Robotics is to transform culture to inspire great respect and admiration for science and technology, while encouraging a greater percentage and diversity of today’s youth to pursue careers in science, engineering, and technology.
As the Roaring Riptide looks forward to their eighth season (2018-19) they are intent on expanding their program both within our school, K-12, as well as extending their outreach activities to diversify the STEM pipeline locally, nationally, and internationally by inspiring and engaging the next generation of underserved, underrepresented youth.
With the increasing need to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) education in today’s schools, P.K. Yonge’s FIRST high school team, Roaring Riptide 4118, is designing and leading creative and sustainable approaches for introducing and supporting STEAM activities that encourage and engage underserved, underrepresented youth to explore STEAM-related academic courses and careers locally, nationally, and internationally.
As members of the FIRST community, our student team members are challenged to serve as role models, to inspire others, and to have a broader impact on their community.
My Project
We chose the Lego WeDo and EV3 kits because the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) program uses these kits as their core curriculum. Our high-school FIRST robotics team, along with their coach (me), are looking to expand our internal STEAM offerings to include K-12 students. We are hoping to provide more opportunities for hands-on learning in both core academics & extracurricular offerings.
Roaring Riptide, is especially excited to create a tidal wave of STEM K-12 at our school!
We already have support for these programs internally and having access to the kits will support us being able to offer the FIRST Robotics programs K-12.
