Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My name is Brenda Rodriguez. Growing up, I noticed a disproportionate lack of resources and opportunities for students from communities like my own. This realization inspired me to pursue a career as a teacher in order to ensure students gain skills to prepare them for college and beyond. One of the ways I try to foster student growth is by coaching the Academic Decathlon (Aca Deca) team which consists of 10 academic events ranging from essay writing to science.
My students are predominantly Latino in a school where 95% of the students are qualified to receive a free or reduced lunch.
Aca Deca is a chance for my students to grow together, develop skills, and provide each other with emotional support. It allows them to be competitive in the application process and feel prepared to be in college. My students prepare over the span of multiple months, investing countless hours studying and learning materials outside of the classroom in preparation for a district-wide competition. My team practices and studies after school, weekends, and during breaks in addition to completing their coursework. Their love for learning and dedication to their development motivate them to take on this immense challenge.
My Project
While the team typically does a chocolate fundraiser, it is not enough to cover all of the materials that the students need in order to study the material and compete against other teams. I am asking for copies “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” because this is the required literature component for Aca Deca this year. Having their own copy will allow them to further develop reading and annotation skills as this is a high level text. In addition, I am asking for expanding file folders because as the coach, I complete lessons with them to better prepare the students for competition and to have a greater depth of understanding of the curriculum. The file folders will allow them to remain organized and have easy access to the handouts and curriculum we use for Aca Deca. Furthermore, I am asking for a curriculum guide to better equip me with helping my students be prepared for the literature component.
By donating to the project, you will arm students with the navigational capital needed to help them overcome the educational barriers that stand in their way.
You will help them be better prepared for college by allowing them to develop skills that can transfer beyond high school. Although I am simply asking for books and file folders, they mean so much more to my students. Thank you for providing my students with educational opportunities and feeding into their thirst for knowledge.
