My students need a class set of Scholastic Student Thesaurus books to increase their vocabulary comprehension and begin speaking with a higher-level of vocabulary.
One of the most enduring findings in reading research is the extent to which students' vocabulary knowledge directly relates to their reading comprehension. With a higher level of vocabulary fluency, a higher level of reading comprehension skills can be obtained.
These sixth grade students attend a high-poverty school district in the state of NY.
With a limited vocabulary and lack of exposure to high levels of vocabulary, many of their reading comprehension skills are low. The districts lack in budget does not allow extra money towards a classroom thesaurus set, which would allow for an increase in vocabulary skills. Thus, resulting in a higher level of reading comprehension skills.
My Project
The Scholastic Student Thesaurus is an innovative, easy-to-use title for students in grades 6-12. It was created for the many kids who get frustrated when they try to use a thesaurus. If they look up a word and "it's not there," many students will give up rather than turn to the indexes in the back of their books to redirect their searches. The Scholastic Student Thesaurus's innovative same-page index solves this problem.
The Scholastic Student Thesaurus will increase students' vocabulary comprehension, resulting in a higher level of reading comprehension. These thesaurus's will also increase their speaking skills, by using a higher level of vocabulary when they speak.
These students' can greatly benefit from having a classroom set of thesaurus's, as they will increase both vocabulary knowledge while increasing reading comprehension skills at the sametime.
The long-term effects of this project will also allow them to sound "intelligent" by using a higher-level of vocabulary when they speak.
