Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low income, dual-language school. My students are a diverse group of English language learners and fluent bilinguals. This group of boys and girls is learning resiliency at an early age due to many difficult family situations. A majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and we are lucky to have breakfast in the classroom each morning.
Our school strives to provide a warm, safe and challenging academic environment for each of its students.
Our principal sets the example of a warm and caring approach toward each of our students. Teachers and students are held to high standards and need the right resources in order to meet them.
My Project
Reading and writing are interconnected, and in order to help my students become capable writers, I must expose them to well-written stories. We regularly use read alouds, choral reading, and buddy reading in our classroom for this purpose.
My students enjoy listening to descriptive language and character development in fictional stories that we read together every day.
Roald Dahl is one of my all-time favorite authors and The BFG (Big Friendly Giant) is one of the most magical children’s books.
Through the story, my students will explore story elements as well as cause and effect patterns. Having enough copies for each of my students to follow along with will enable them to see proper grammar and language in action too.
