I am honored to introduce you to our rural middle school located in Northeast Michigan. Our student body consists of 800+ students who are 6th, 7th and 8th graders, spanning one of the largest geographic districts in the state of Michigan, over 600 square miles.
Our students, unfortunately, pale in comparison to the millions of national and international middle school students with technological and metropolitan advantages.
I dream to offer a little piece of the real-world to those students of ours whom will never have the opportunity to explore outside of our small town.
Contrary to popular belief, not all American students own an at-home computer. Yet, most American classrooms teach as if they do. I would like to bridge that gap by offering Chromebooks that can be checked-out from the school media center without cost to the students. School children have been able to "borrow" books from their libraries from the very young age of 5. Today, why not allow the same concept with tools that will help achieve educational success and develop global awareness?
Our students are responsible young adults.
They deserve the opportunity to complete their assignments at home like their peers. These Chromebooks will give them access to Google Classroom and Edmodo, two of the many platforms our district utilizes. They deserve the success that comes with collaboration after school hours with their classmates on these classroom platforms. These middle school students deserve the opportunity to travel outside of their rural community through exploration and research. The Chromebooks will give them access to a restricted, safe Google search engine. Most importantly, they deserve the opportunity to explore and experience life outside of our small-border town.
Please collaborate with me to show these middle school students the world outside our rural community so they, too, can aspire to succeed in a world of metropolitan mentality.
