I teach math and science in a middle school that serves highly gifted students. My students love to learn and are driven to succeed. It is my goal to develop a STEM classroom where my students can apply their content knowledge and make real world connections while engaging science, math and engineering first hand. Many of my students are highly anxious and are afraid to fail. I want them to learn that failure can lead to success in a safe environment. Also, they sometimes struggle when having to work collaboratively to solve problems. These are soft skills that my highly gifted students need to develop in order to be successful when they attend college or enter the work force. I believe they all can be successful; they just need some extra help to get there.
My Project
This project will engage my students as they become biochemists working on the production of our own unique brand of root beer. We need bottles, sassafras root, sugar, funnels, and yeast! Standards will be addressed across science disciplines from physical and chemical change when they will be creating the root beer extract from scratch. Biology standards will be incorporated as they learn about and engage in the fermentation process. Once students learn the basic biochemistry of brewing root beer the competition of who can brew the best new flavor of root beer begins. They will take on the role of engineers and will be challenged to develop their own recipe, produce a sample and market it to a company in hopes of getting their brand to market.
