Ms. Smith from Detroit MI is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to see the world and travel to places they are learning about in class. Donations will offset the cost of travel and hotel.

My students have a thirst for learning. They love hands on, experience based learning. My students have huge hearts and shallow pocketbooks. I teach Seniors in a large urban district. My students lack the resources to have experiences that students from more affluent school districts have. My students are involved in community volunteer work, as well as working for a paycheck to assist their families. Our school is located in a zip code associated with the largest amount of crime in our city. My students experience this each day when walking to and from school or while riding the bus for well over an hour just to attend school.
Our school is a small school where everyone knows everyone.
We are a family. We take care of each other in times of need. We laugh together, cry together and celebrate our accomplishments together. We have a staff of caring people who assist students whenever and wherever needed. Our students are loved. While some may go home to extraordinary circumstances, they persevere. They don't allow themselves to fall victims to their environment. I do have the best kids!
Students learn by being in the moment, having hands on experiences. My British Literature students would benefit from a trip to Paris and London to witness all of the things of which we speak of in class. They have learned about King Louis and Marie Antoinette, the French Revolution, the have heard all about the Palace of Versailles. Next year (as seniors) my students will learn about the Tower of London, the Plague, read Canterbury Tales and hear all about taking a trip of a lifetime, they will read Hamlet and perform scenes from the great Shakespeare play. I want them to experience and use their senses to be in the moment and bring life to their learning.
I want my inner city students to have the same experiences that students from more affluent districts have.
I believe that travel is the greatest learning experience of all time. My students would like to take in the sites, smells, tastes, and touch objects that they have learned about in class We plan to visit in London: Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and take in a play, the Tower of London to see where Ann Boleyn lost her head, Tower Bridge, and the famed London Bridge (which is just a regular old bridge), have lunch along the Thames, see where battles were fought and won, visit the Tate Modern, Westminster Abbey and Parliament (and Big Ben, too), and the War Memorial, just to name a few. We also plan to see in Paris: The Palace of Versailles, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral.
