Have you ever felt the thrill of performing in front of an audience? Do you know the excitement musicians feel as they perform together, creating an experience shared by listeners and unifying them, if only for a short time?
If you walk the halls of our school, you will be greeted by the most friendly, polite, and intelligent kids you have ever met!
Our students love coming to school, love learning, and love to be challenged. It is not uncommon to see students using their free time to read, write, or research something they are interested in. Our students are creative and possess unique abilities that our school celebrates regularly. The school serves students from a variety of socioeconomic groups, but there is a very large population of students who receive free or reduced-price lunches. The students at our school are educated by some of the best in the state. The teachers at our school are willing to do whatever it takes to give students experiences that they might not otherwise have. Our school is a bright spot in the community and one that teachers, students, and parents are proud to be a part of!
My Project
My students currently have buckets that we use as drums, unfortunately we do not have quality sticks to make beautiful sounds! Right now we are using rhythm sticks, and they are breaking right and left.
Imagine how frustrating it would be to be in the middle of an amazing drum riff, you're in the zone and jamming as hard as you can, then all of a sudden your sticks break in two!
This is the reality of my classroom right now. My students love jamming on their bucket drums, they have made amazing progress, but they are constantly having to stop and replace their rhythm sticks because they just can't hold up to the force of being smacked against a bucket all day. Not only do we lack the necessary materials for drumming, we are ruining my rhythm sticks that I use in my music classes as well.
Having a class set of drums means we must be considerate neighbors. Drums are loud-and that's fun! Unfortunately our drumming can be heard up and down the hallways. My students need the cloths to cover the tops of the buckets and muffle the sound so we don't disturb the classrooms around us.
Having the drumsticks in my music class will not only provide the correct materials for drumming, but also preserve my rhythm sticks. Having the cloths for the heads will make our music more tolerable to those around us!
