My students need a marker board table with a top that is just like a dry erase board to use when I pull a small group of students for re-teaching.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our math lessons always begin with a model of the skill. Students then have time to practice with partners and independently. While the high-performing students work, I pull some of my students that struggle to the back table. This is when the table would come in handy for re-teaching.
I teach 34 second grade students every day.
They are a mixture of Caucasian, African-American, and Hispanic students. I have a few students who are learning English as a second language. My students are very excited and motivated to learn. They love to experiment with new tools! Our school is currently a B school so teachers are being pushed and encouraged to try new and exciting techniques to help the students grow even more.
Every day, students take an exit ticket. This comes at the end of the lesson and helps me to see who met their target for the day. Anyone who did not meet the target gets pulled into a small group for re-teaching the next day. These students gather at my kidney table in the back. Currently, everyone uses white boards, including myself, but the white boards make it very hard for me to watch the children work. By using the white board table, I could watch each child work and determine where they are breaking down within the skill. This would really help me know how to meet their needs and increase their learning. I would also be able to show my own work on the table for them to use as they complete their task.
This table would improve my classroom by increasing the mastery in daily lessons.
The goal is always for 100% of students to master the lesson, but unfortunately, that isn't always the case. This table would really help the students and me collaborate to increase our understanding of each other: my understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, and their understanding of my expectations for high quality work. In the end, my students will leave me with a very strong foundation for math.
