My Students
My students are 3 and 4 year old pre-kindergarten students with various speech delays. Some of my students have developmental speech disorders while others have language delays, difficulty speaking fluently, or may be deaf and/or hard of hearing. They are from diverse backgrounds and they walk into class every day full of energy, excitement, and are ready to learn.
They are a part of an early intervention program which provides them with extra support before entering kindergarten.
Our goal is to help them become mainstreamed into a general education kindergarten classroom.
My Project
Speech therapy is provided in small group instruction. Currently I am using a rectangular table which makes it difficult to provide face to face instruction for my students. With a horseshoe-shaped table, the teacher sits in the middle of the table and the student group sits along the outside of the table.
This allows each student to remain close to the teacher and receive face to face instruction.
With this layout, the teacher is able to focus on each student in the group and provide redirection as needed. This helps the teacher maintain appropriate attention during small group instruction and increase on task behavior. Being close to the teacher is especially important when providing speech therapy, so the therapist can model correct speech production and provide adequate visual and tactile feedback. The chair will allow me to maintain proper positioning when providing speech therapy during small group instruction.
