My Students

One of the best things about developing knowledge of literature in the minds of young writers is helping them understand that poetry is open to anyone who has a desire to express their thoughts and feelings. Having readily available a collection of rich, quality literature is every teacher's dream.

The boys and girls who attend our school come from a predominately blue collar, working class community from rural North Carolina.

Our school has a school-wide Title I Program which means at least forty percent of the student population come from low-income homes. Many of our students rarely have the opportunity outside of school to read poetry. Poetry is especially important for children. Elementary school age children are at a critical age when they discover the wonders and benefits of poetry in order to create lifetime readers out of them.  Knowing the nature of children, poetry is easy for them to love, because they love playing with language.  Boys and girls are at the unique stage of life when they are discovering the many uses of language.  Rhymes and patterns are very obvious and exciting and can be used by parents and teachers alike to begin a love of poetry and reading. Poetry is a good way to give children the initiative to start reading more comprehensive material.

My Project

A Symphony of Young Poets Project exposes boys and girls to authentic children's literature that they have perhaps never experienced before. Having accessible to the students a variety of children's poetry books works wonders in wetting ones appetite for poetry. Allow time for boys and girls to read through a number of poetry books. Provide time for the teacher and students to share poems of their liking with the class. Read poems which are funny, inspiring, thought provoking, emotional, and silly. The usage of magnetic word tiles help students manipulate words to create free verse poetry with enthusiasm and excitement. During reading and writing time, introduce students to a variety of poetic devices. Capture the spirit! Students create their own Poetry Anthology Notebooks. After students have been immersed in poetry and have compiled their poetry, celebrate their finished pieces by opening a Poets Cafe Night and have students invite their parents and other family members.

Children everywhere deserve the right to develop the skills necessary to become the next generation of global thinkers/leaders.

Ideas and realities to change the world will come from the fourth graders I teach today. My desire is to place my students from the rural region of the Appalachian Mountains on a level playing field with youngsters across the globe. Help me provide the tools that will encourage them to participate, interact, and improve education in our community and around the world.
