Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a freshman English teacher at Long Island City HS, I know all too well that over 60% of incoming freshmen have failed their eighth grade English examination. One thing soon becomes clear--they can't write, or at least not well enough to pass the English Regents exam (one of the subject tests they must pass to graduate, and among the toughest of any U.S. state). That's why I beleive that a school-wide Student Writing Center would be an invaluable asset to not only my students, but to all students at my high-needs school who struggle with writing.
Imagine an English teacher with 34 students who can't give the individual attention that each student needs when they're working on papers. Or a Science teacher who sees students who struggle with writing lab reports. Wouldn't it be wonderful to simply refer those students to the Student Writing Center, where they could recieve help from one of their more knowledgable peers, rather than to see them slip through the cracks, or worse, give up?
The Student Writing Center I envision would be cross-curriculum, integration-oriented, and student-centered. In training older students to tutor and teach their struggling peers, they become stronger writers themselves. They would give up their study halls to provide a wonderful service for their school community (that would look great on a college application!) Tutees would simply sign up for an open slot in the schedule and bring their papers, their ideas, and a willingness to learn. A Student Writing Center would empower students to take their education and their proficiency in writing into their own hands!!
All they would need is a little guidance... and resources provided by your generosity. A successful SWC would need: reference, grammar, and writing process books; binders for sign-in sheets and tutoring session logs; bookmarks, signs and fliers with the SWC schedule to advertise the service to the student body throughout the year; a filing cabinet and organizing tools; and a shelf/cart for materials. With your help, I believe that the Student Writing Center will become an invaluable resource at my school that will help create strong writers for years to come... that is, if I have the resources to get the project started!
