1st grade is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. The students at the our school come to school each day looking to be challenged through academics and are loved for the individuals they are. Working in a Title I school brings many challenges, but we work together as a family to provide each child with the opportunity to succeed.
Finding new ways to challenge them, and opening up different areas of the classroom will give them endless opportunities.
I have 27 students in my class who come from mixed backgrounds. They enjoy using their imaginations. They are an active group, who are always ready to get out of their seats and investigate something new. They want to learn and want to have fun while doing so. Every day I want my students to leave eager to find out what is in store for the next day. First grade is a time when academics are extremely important, but it is also extremely valuable to demonstrate how school can truly be an unforgettable experience
My classroom is in need of STEM materials! We are hoping to add Magformers, Blocks Rock, and containers. We would love binders so that we can practice writing about the items that we create. We would love to have the math interactive game to keep math exciting and fun.
STEM education is about hands-on learning.
All of these tools will encourage exploration and collaboration. Being hands-on is especially important for kinesthetic learners. With the appropriate materials, students will become engineers. Hands-on learning can also help students retain information. It is so important to work beyond worksheets and bring in as many materials as possible.
Students will experiment through trial and error and grow from their mistakes. My hope is to encourage students to explore the STEM field and learn as much as possible. The more opportunities I can give to the students, the more likely they are to be excited about coming to school each day!
