My Students

My students come from all walks of life. I have students whose parents have PhDs and 6 figure salaries; I have students whose parents are blue collar and hardworking, but I also many students whose home lives are significantly less stable. While some students are presented with all the opportunities in the world, many consider it a success to make it through the day without much issue.

Despite all their differences, from race to socioeconomic, I see a group of students who often come together to do amazing things.

I was born and raised in this community. I chose to work in this community because it's played such a major part of my life and I believe it is my responsibility to give back to the community that has always been so important to me.

My Project

These books will be used in all my regular English 9 courses. The goal is to purchase enough books so each student will be able to take home with them and read outside of class and your donation will help make that possible. Our mission as a department is to provide engaging texts that also force our readers to think deeply about concepts and ideas.

When our students find engaging texts, they are capable of producing high level work.

Bryan Stevenson’s book has been described as a true version of To Kill a Mockingbird. It is at times sad, infuriating, and joyous. The story is how Bryan Stevenson made it his mission to help men on death row. In doing so, he took on the case of Walter McMillan, “a young man sentenced to die for a notorious murder he didn’t commit.”

Our unit to end the year is centered around the idea of “Author’s Purpose.” Stevenson’s purpose is clear: to tell the story of how he and others are fighting for justice and in doing so, hopefully preventing more injustices from happening to men like Walter McMillan.
