Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at Nystrom Elementary School in the heart of Richmond, CA, a very urban neighborhood. Despite the fact that many of my students do without new clothes or toys, they have shown themselves eager to help others who are even less fortunate. For example, they have read books for Classroom Cares, a program that offered to donate books to needy children when our class read 100 books. My students also collected pennies and nickels for Tsunami relief.
In order to nurture this spirit of philanthropy and share a useful past-time, I would like to start a knitting club during recess for students of any grade level who are interested. I will teach them the basic knitting stitch and we will make baby blankets. These blankets will then be donated to the local hospital through a program called Project Linus that provides hand-made blankets to seriously ill children. I have worked with this organization before, and for many seriously ill children, these blankets will be the only "baby" thing they have for a while.
In addition to helping others, the children will learn a useful, lifelong skill as well as the perseverance and patience for working toward a goal.
We don't need much to get started. I'm asking for 20 pairs of plastic safety knitting needles (large enough to be manipulated by even small fingers) and enough yarn to create 10 blankets (since the children can independently knit pieces of a blanket).
Thank you for considering this proposal and for your support of the ideal that we all have something to offer our fellow human beings.
