Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at Nystrom Elementary School in the heart of Richmond, CA, a very urban neighborhood. Despite the fact that many of my students do without new clothes or toys, they have shown themselves eager to help others who are even less fortunate. For example, they have read books for Classroom Cares, a program that offered to donate books to needy children when our class read 100 books. Our school also collected pennies and nickels for Tsunami relief.
In order to nurture this spirit of philanthropy, I stared a knitting club during recess and after school for 4th and 5th grade students. I have taught them the basic knitting stitch and we are making baby blankets. These blankets will then be donated to the local hospital through a program called Project Linus that provides hand-made blankets to seriously ill children. I have worked with this organization before, and for many seriously ill children, these blankets will be the only "baby" thing they have for a while. In addition to helping others, the children are learning a useful, lifelong skill as well as the perseverance and patience for working toward a goal.
Interest in this club has far surpassed my original expectations of twenty students, and the waiting list is now almost that long including students from lower grades. I would like to expand the capacity of the club to include all interested students and provide materials for students to continue working as some have already completed their first blanket!
I'm asking for 15 pairs of plastic safety knitting needles and enough yarn to create 20 more blankets.
Thank you for considering this proposal and for your support of the ideal that we all have something to offer our fellow human beings.
