Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Si se puede." is the slogan we have in my transitional bilingual classroom in Trenton, New Jersey. By providing opportunities for students of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, these curious learners can believe that their goals are possible to achieve.
All my students have immigrated to the United States to access both the economic and educational advantages that exist here.
Their limited English proficiency is not limiting their desire to learn. They are eager to learn the required curriculum as they are developing skills in the English language.
These students have been in the country for no more than three years, and most have been here for less than a year. It is important that they participate in engaging and authentic activities to acquire their new language with confidence. As their teacher, I strive to provide them with an educational environment that fosters this growth!
My Project
In order for students to be engaged when learning science, they themselves must transform into scientists. If this transformation is to occur, students must have access to all the necessary STEM materials within their environment. As fifth graders, students are expected to learn about our planet Earth. They cannot fully comprehend its vast complexity without questioning, "What is our relationship with the planet on which we live?"
Student engagement will be enhanced when they are provided with STEM experiences that allow them to question, explore, experiment, observe and reflect.
Global Challenges Project-Based STEM Kits and Book Set will provide the initial materials students will need to begin their hands-on quest into understanding Earth and our relationship with this magnificent planet.
