My students need a class set of 35 copies of "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck. Having never read any book by Steinbeck, I feel that this is a great novel to explore.
This project expired on June 23, 2013.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
When my tenth graders hear the name John Steinbeck, they do not recognize this iconic author. To me this is a crime. It is time to change this mindset and get them on the Steinbeck train. First stop? "Of Mice and Men" to get acquainted with George and Lennie. Next stop? Why not "Grapes of Wrath?"
My students attend a low income, high crime neighborhood high school which is limited in its resources.
They are starved for knowledge and support, having no one at home who reads to them or has the time to meet their needs. Most families are single family homes, with the parent who does take care of them working two or three jobs (which doesn't bode well for the nurturing these kids need.) They come to school hungry and tired, many holding down after school jobs. We all know that the teenage years are difficult to begin with, so having to contend with this added stress and pressure creates vulnerability and low self esteem.
I am requesting 35 copies (one class set) of John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men." What better way to introduce an author of the caliber of John Steinbeck, than to begin with this novel? His characters are rich in emotions that they can certainly relate to, and it would additionally meet their skill set. My plan is to analyze the characters and make connections to their individual shortcomings and dreams. They need to know that a novel written all these years ago still resonates with the struggles and drama we all deal with on a daily basis. I would love to then continue with other Steinbeck novels, knowing that this will whet their appetite for more! They are desperate for a gripping, emotional story this would provide for them.
This project is so important to me, because I see all the things I took for granted as a teenager are not available to these kids.
They don't grow up in homes where they are read to as children, who are natured and protected by two parents. Their world is limited to the block they live on. A great beginning would be a Steinbeck book, nothing too complicated, but one that will resonate with them into adulthood. Its simplicity and universality would be just what the doctor ordered!
