Ms. Massey from Oklahoma City OK is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

A Star Is Born

My students need five more copies of "Introduction to Theatre Arts" to complete our current class set, and I would like to move onto the sequel that will build upon their already budding skills. We need 20 copies of it. I am also interested in building their confidence through individual and group activities. The "Theatre Games and Activities" book requested is designed with that in mind.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"I teach a variety of subjects at my school. These include: English, Math, Leadership and Acting. I am also involved in our Science and History classes. Our school is located in the heart of Oklahoma City, and even though we are a part of the Oklahoma City District our funding is severely limited since we are a Charter School. The demographics of our school is varied. The majority is of a Hispanic Background, with African Americans as a close second. The rest of the school varies with Caucasian, Asian, Vietnamese, and Polish. Over 50% of our students are on free or reduced lunch and money is tight in their family units. Thus, the reason for seeking other creative avenues to raise funds for the materials we need. They hunger to be successful in many areas of their lives and have big dreams of being first to graduate from college! We are in the heart of Oklahoma where diversity is at the core of the school.

Show stopping acting has been a viable outlet for our students. They show us everyday that they want to be a success and that they can break out of the shell that has been created for them. Through acting, they can be who they dream they want to be and they can talk like someone else! Not only is there a creative outlet but they learn without even realizing it! Our obstacle is pure and simple...our students come from poor or impoverish families and funds are severely limited! We have big dreams, both the students and the teachers, and believe that those dreams can come true with hard work and stamina. We are in our second year of performing in front of live audiences...these students have shown incredible determination, rehearsing almost every day after school and giving up their Saturdays. The best testament to the program is that students not only want the after-school program, but they are requesting it as an elective in the 7th and 8th grades! I would say that this is a high need and request if we are going to truly support their art!

The books and activities are designed to give them tools. These tools will fuel them through their performances, giving them valuable insights to be a star! We want to start them young, I have started with sixth grade and tried to build a small foundation. But to actually have a 7th and 8th Grade Drama class would be invaluable and that is where these books would be used. There is 36 lessons in each book and I have already used the first one, which the students have really learned from and look forward to the next level edition! The classroom would not be the only place the books would be use, we still have after-school drama and would continue through the books during that time.

Why donate? The answer is simple, the students want the classes and we need the materials for the classes! Drama is a way for students to be someone they are not; and many need this outlet to help keep them on the right track! Enrollment for 7th and 8th Drama is hugely popular this year. They have seen the performances from the after-school drama and now want to try it themselves. Which is awesome because not only would we have two opportunities to teach, but we would be developing a greater and diverse pool of students for each of our plays!
