Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 5 or 6 year old kids benefiting from the Spanish Immersion Program. The language of instruction is Spanish while the students are English speakers. In order to provide more Spanish language exposure, I teach through music and creative instruction. The students learn the new context through reading, dramatization, dancing, and singing. This allow then to enjoy and understand what they are learning with enthusiasm and commitment.
My students are constantly asking me what we are doing next.
I try to make every day an experience they never forget. They love coming to school because they enjoy being part of every activity we develop in the class.
When we learn new vocabulary, there is always a song that goes with it. It helps them retain the new words more effectively. We create dances from kinesthetic movements to help us remember the key words learned during the day or week. We also make crafts to promote a sense of community and creativity to our learning.
My Project
I teach through arts and love. My students are English speakers aiming to learn Spanish through the curriculum. My students learn new Spanish songs every week to promote exposure to the new language. We also create new songs together and perform it in the class. Most of their learning has occurred through this type of creative learning. My parents are constantly sharing with me how their kids love singing in Spanish at home. This learning extends to their homes where they teach their siblings and parents the new content.
We will be performing at the school auditorium as a celebration to the spring season.
I thought it would be a great idea to share with the school how much they have learned. Because this is a field experience, my students are feeling very excited to debut in an auditorium where they are the central attraction.
We will perform songs, dances, and role play. Some students will present some research about the Black History Month figures and others from Latin America.
This karaoke system will be used to practice and to perform. It will be used for them to practice their singing and to rehearse for their first performance. It will also be used for the day of the show. It is easy to carry and to use and the lights will bring some child spirit to our show.
I think all kids deserve an opportunity to show their talent. I truly believe that every child is an actor with a lot of potential to develop; that is why I want to offer my students the opportunity to be that special in a very special day.
