Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of my students have nothing, so having their own spot on the carpet can be very special to them.
I teach a classroom of English Language Learners.
I currently have 19 students and they speak 7 different languages, including English. Our classroom is only one of three ELL classrooms in our school. Our school has the highest transient population of any other school in our district. I teach first grade and I have been the 3rd, 4th or even 5th teacher that some of these kids have had.
My Project
I often have my students meet on the carpet many times during the day. We meet for math, grammar, and reading, just to name a few times. With this rug I can tell the students where to sit by giving them oral clues. For example, "Johnny, please sit on the animal whose name starts with /m/."
My students are English Language Learners so it is very important for them to be able to speak with a friend. While we are meeting I give my students think time after I ask a question and they they are to turn to a partner. With this rug, I will be able to partner students up by using the animals on the squares.
A donation will help give my students their own spot.
There won't be pushing and shoving trying to sit with a friend. Students won't be left out because nobody will sit with them.
