A Special Seat for Special Kids

My students need a special needs corner chair so they can sit supported during class lessons at the carpet.

My Students

Everyone wants to be included and that's no different for my students.

Our school is a K-5th grade Elementary school along the rural Gulf Coast Alabama.

We are a Title I school and this year our school qualifies to receive breakfast and lunch for every student at no charge. My class is a self-contained special needs class. I have 10 boys from K-5th grade. I have 3 students in wheelchairs, 5 are non-verbal, and their disabilities include Developmental Delay, Autism, Intellectual Disability, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Other Health Impairment. All of my students need almost constant assistance with not only Academics but also their self-care.

My Project

We try to do everything as a class despite all of our different needs. We spend a lot of time down at our carpet for circle time, calendar, reading, and more. We try to limit our students' time in their wheelchairs while in the classroom. When we are down at the floor it is important that they can be apart of what is going on. This specialized corner chair will give one of my students the ability to sit up with the physical support needed to be able to attend and participate in class lessons and activities with his peers down at the carpet.

Even in a special needs class it is important to be included.

Having all of my students on the same physical level during instruction will provide opportunities for all to learn and grow while feeling included and important.
