In my classroom I teach 26 kindergartners, each an individual. Each child shows up daily, excited to be here and ready for the fun that our day holds. They enjoy learning and getting to explore in our classroom each day.
Each day we start our morning with circle time on the carpet.
The carpet is the area where we greet one another, learn about each days activities, celebrate our accomplishments, learn all of our main academics and work together as a team. The carpet in our classroom is the center of our room, the most important area, our meeting ground.
All of my kindergartners currently spend about 40% of their school day sitting on the floor for circle time, calendar and several mini lessons throughout the day. My students love this time on the carpet, but we are lacking an actual rug for them to sit on. I have tried a variety of other things, but they end of causing more distraction then good.
My students need a carpet so they know they have a place, a place to seat everyday, a place that is their own.
By providing my classroom with a carpet, one that has a circle for each student to sit on, they will no longer have distraction and be able to focus during these important times. They will have a clear understanding of where their spot is and be able to quickly go there daily. With the use of a rug, the students will also have "their" own space. This will prevent crowding, invading space, and arguments over spots.
