My Students

I teach a classroom full of students with multiple disabilities. Their disabilities can range from physical, cognitive, and verbal. Out of the 8 students in my classroom, 5 are in wheelchairs and unable to walk. All 8 are non-verbal and communicate with staff using their preferred method of communication which ranges from gestures, eye gaze, manual communication board, or speech generating device. Many of my students have difficulty with fine motor skills and must rely on staff for all activities of daily living including feeding, toileting, and help with classwork.

During class we work on functional academic skills and work hard to connect our activities with meaningful skill building that also relates to what their non-disabled peers are doing.

My Project

This trip will make a difference to my students by connecting the learning in the classroom to a unique community based arts experience at a local college, the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival.

We will be able to relate our classroom read aloud of Charlotte's Web to the live action play at the nearby theatre!

It will be a a great opportunity to get outside our self-contained special education room and experience our community arts program.

In addition, we will be able to compare and contrast the book to the actual live action play. It will be an experience that I would not be able to give them without your help!
