I am teaching 25 fantastic third graders this year that range in age from 8-10 years old in a high poverty area in Boston. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students are English Language Learners, students with disabilities, and other students that come to school with a variety of skills and abilities that will contribute to our class in a positive way.
These students are so excited to come to school!
They are hard workers and take every advantage they can to get the most out of each day. I look forward to learning from them as much as they will learn from me. I will help them take every opportunity to get the most out of their education this year.
Last year was my first year at my new school. In my classroom, there was a small carpet that we used throughout the year for the students to sit on during group meetings and lessons. It was too cramped and caused many seating conflicts throughout the year. Third graders are a little bit bigger than students in grades K-2. They need the materials that are appropriate for them so that they can focus and be successful.
Students have the right to have their own place to sit, where they can and will immerse themselves in their learning.
This is such a basic, but essential component in a classroom. At this age, meetings and some lessons are done at the carpet. It is important to have one in every classroom. Students will use the carpet throughout the day for morning meeting, reading groups, math demonstrations, and closing meetings. This will enhance the environment and their academic abilities by allowing the students to focus on the content and not having to smush into a space that is too small for them.
