My students need warm, comfortable, and cozy furniture for our classroom soft area that is suitable for just escaping into a reading selection of their choosing.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My school is located in South East, Washington, DC and serves low income, special education students with a myriad of learning disabilities. What I love most about my students is the resilience and determination they display daily in the learning environment in order to overcome major deficits in reading comprehension and written expression. My students are very special to me, they make me feel as if I am tending to a garden because every day that I nourish and feed them with instruction and challenge them to think on higher and higher levels I can see them thrive and flourish and develop a true appreciation for life long learning.
I have a very large, institutional looking classroom which I have worked very hard at trying to create a comfortable, structured, and organized area for my students to read in.
However, in reality my classroom falls short of that warm, comfortable, and cozy environment my students can temporarily escape into while reading an interesting and engaging selection of their choosing.
The materials requested will make a HUGE difference in my students' learning. Primarily by providing them with a structured, soft, comfortable, and cozy area within the classroom that is designated as a special place to escape into a good book. It will be carpeted, with two bean bag chairs, two floor pillows, two folding chaise chairs, two small tables, and a floor lamp.
I can just imagine the joy and excitement on my students' faces when they arrive into the classroom environment and see the special place created for them to go to while completing their daily independent reading.
Certainly an environment such as this will allow them to be comfortable while being engaged in an enriching life-long skill of reading and allowing them to escape and wonder and imagine as they explore a varieties of genres.
