Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A special place, the library environment that regardless of disability or age the student would be able to select a book that would give them joy. A library for a special need student can be a place of dread and pain. My student Marco told me, "I can enjoy reading a scary chapter book if it comes with a tape."
My goal is to create a special environment that regardless of disability or age the student would be able to select and enjoy a book that would meet their needs. The school is located in a low income area with minority families who don't speak English. Our class consist of special need students with different learning styles from kindergarten thru the fifth grade. The class is a self-contain group of students aging from 6-11 years old.
The age differences make it so that the classroom environment needs to provide a variety of selections of books to reflect their interest. This is challenging even for someone who has been teaching for many years. Keeping up with the new and exciting titles and trends are costly. The younger groups in our class would prefer to read a Dr. Seuss books, the middle group would prefer a fantasy story, and the older group would prefer real-stories that they could relate too. Most importantly the library also needs to meet their style of learning. Students who struggle with dyslexia would need a book on tape to enjoy. A student who struggles with auditory processing deficits might enjoy reading a book on the computer. This is what makes having a library/class chalenging and very rewarding.
The materials needed to achive this goal of creating a classroom library for 12-15 students would consist of the following: A variety of different levels and interest books. Books on tape, CD, and leap pad books would meet the needs.
