The students in this class learn about various communication skills. These are skills necessary for success in their careers and in building relationships among peers, family, and community.
The students who participate in this activity are a special group because they show poise and bravery in an area that many people tend to avoid: public speaking.
These are the people that become our future civic leaders, teachers, lawyers, and doctors.
The best part about participating in communications is that those who often do not get heard, those who live on the fringe of high school society, find a voice in communications activities. They get the chance to find their place and grow.
My Project
My students participate in a communications class and in speech competitions. These events require special equipment. We have made do with old boomboxes and tiny portable speakers, but these items are not beneficial to the students' growth and performances. Judges are telling us they cannot hear us, and that is hurting our scores.
We need better equipment to practice and perform on to be successful in our endeavors.
Students can work very hard, and perform very well, but if their performance cannot be heard, then all of the time and effort has been wasted, and they give up. They feel they are not good enough, and they stop trying.
This equipment will break down that barrier, and help the students build up the confidence that they can be heard, that they can be successful, and that they are not only good enough, but they are also great.
