My Spanish students are ranch kids from North East Texas. They are trying to meet their graduation requirement of 2 years of a foreign language. We are in an area where there is very little opportunity to hear or speak the language with native speakers.
Authentic interaction with the target language is key to learning a new language.
My new school does not have a Spanish library for the students to read. So I would like to create a classroom library. The library would consist of both Spanish and Bi-lingual books. The books would begin at their reading level and eventually extend to Young Adult fiction.
My Project
Having an eclectic classroom library is essential in every classroom. These classroom libraries support the school library by expanding titles and providing students with quick access to books when they finish their class assignment.
The classroom library, although eclectic, can still be more specific in its approach to student needs.
In my student's case, it is the Spanish language at the beginning and intermediate levels. This library has short bilingual stories that can be read between assignments to both introduce and reinforce vocabulary.
This library will offer my students an opportunity to explore and learn Spanish at their own pace.
