Help me give my students a separate space and a true instructional looking space from the rest of the storage room and a board to use that is not behind supplies.
I am an English as a second language teacher &I teach in Pittsburgh, PA which is a sanctuary city! Pittsburgh is a great city for a multitude of reasons. There is a rich immigrant history to our city as well as a culture and community that is accepting & loving. Our students come here to find a new 'home' when home is taken from them. The concept of home is so important; having a place and space to call your own lowers the effective filters & fosters learning and builds community. Unfortunately, during the pandemic shutdown, part of our classroom was taken over for storage. In a K-5 elementary setting there are so many distractions & interruption to our day, we try to minimize them. I am seeking room dividers and a dry erase board so that I can section off "our side" of the storage room & the students feel like they are in a learning environment and not a closet.
As an itinerant English as a second language teacher I usually push into others classroom space, but it's important for my students to feel like they have a school "home" & distraction free learning space.
My Project
As an English as a second language teacher, most of my students have been moved around a lot during their young lives. They have left their home country and homes due to circumstances beyond their control. The room dividers will section off our classroom space from the office supplies that take up a quarter of the room now and give them ownership back of their classroom. We also lost valuable chalkboard space when the room was taken over. We used this often in lessons and stations. The students will be able to use the whiteboard to engage in lessons, collaborate and show their work once more.
Everyone deserves to feel welcomed, safe and cozy in a classroom, especially since we are returning to in person learning.
Students need a safe space and their own space to grow and learn.
As an itinerant teacher, I often have to push into other learning spaces or share spaces with rooms that pull double duty in the school. The dividers will help us block out the distractions of the office supplies that have found their way into our instructional area and whiteboard will give us our board back.
