This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 26 curious and energetic kindergarten boys and girls. They go to school for a full day of learning, so a hands-on approach to reading, math and science really helps them when they are wiggly! They enjoy listening to stories, singing songs, playing on the playground and learning in school. Growing up in an inner city poses numerous challenges for them, but they are smart children! Having the supplies to help them learn in a fun and interactive way helps to close the achievement gap that many of the students face.
My Project
A new clean carpet where everyone has a space would be helpful for our students. Classroom carpets take a beating year....after year ....after year. They are expensive and aren't seen as a high need item when administration is already stretching much needed funds. In an early childhood classroom all kinds of accidents happen that don't often happen in the classrooms of older students! We spend lots of time on our carpet. It gets walked on and used every day. We sit on it and listen to stories, play freeze dance when we need to wiggle, play games with sight words and put together puzzles on the carpet. Carpet time is an integral part of the day and our current carpet is in desperate need of disposal.
