Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Field trip!", teacher says. "Yay!", the students respond. This is usually the response I get when I announce that we're taking a trip. No matter what type of trip we are taking, be it to the park across the street or the museum that is 20 miles away, kids always love to hear these words.
I currently work in a Title I school a few minutes away from downtown Los Angeles where all kids qualify for free school lunch.
Although all of these students live in a city known for it's diverse cultures and museums, a great number of the kids in our classrooms seldom visit these places on their own time. A great number of our children are English Language Learners and although all kids vary in their levels of English acquisition, they all have one thing in common. They all love to EXPLORE.
My Project
At Kidspace Children's Museum our students will have an opportunity to "explore and investigate the natural world and express themselves in creative ways". The museum offers a variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits where children will get a chance to interact and make sense of their own learning through trial and error. It will expose many to a world that they do not know exists and give them another means to create their own learning. For all kids alike, it will provide them with a space where their learning will not be limited to a textbook or the confines of a classroom.
I hope that you will agree with me in that student learning should be balanced.
Although students can learn a lot in a structured environment where the teacher guides them, it is also necessary to allow students to make sense of their world through exploration. I feel that by providing our students with this opportunity we will achieve a balance and much more.
