We're a Title I School with 83% Free and Reduced Lunch Students, but that doesn't stop us from working hard, thinking creatively, and growing our brains with challenging learning opportunities! Our classes are comprised of all kinds of races and background, weaving a colorful tapestry of cultures and dynamics that form our school community.
Our school is located in a small town (roughly 3500 people) in northern California, where agriculture, 4-H, tribal and Hispanic culture, and the arts play an emphasis in student's home lives.
Sports are a primary activity outside of school, with football games on Friday nights and soccer games on Saturday mornings being where you find the biggest crowds in town.
Many of these students have never been further away from home than the nearest town 2 hours away, and their worldview is limited to media. A significant percentage of them have parents with an education of high school or below, and they don't necessarily know the options they have for flourishing to the best of their abilities. Our challenge is to discover what is available, and believe that we can achieve everything we put our minds--and effort--into.
My Project
This will be my first year teaching an elementary class, and I'm starting from ground zero on setting up the classroom. I need to create a venue for optimum learning, a space where students can sit in comfort and order, and the colorful block carpet will be a prime feature of this space.
We will be doing lots of reading and talking about new and exciting things, so the students will need a clean, comfortable carpet to relax on.
The layout of the carpet will help to assign spaces to students who can sit by each other, as well as those who probably ought not to. Creating a comfortable space is proven to enhance optimum learning, and I want students to feel like it's their home away from home when they come to school.
It would mean so much to offer my students a colorful, comfortable, safe and clean space to learn in. The quality of the carpet means it will last for years and lots of students, so it will be an excellent investment in student learning.
