I am honored to teach first grade again this year. The students that come to my classroom come from many different backgrounds with a wide variety of languages spoken at home. They want to learn, be challenged, and work hard to reach their goals. We work very hard to open the doors to every possible opportunity for a bright future for all of our elementary students.
For many of our students, our school is the only consistent and safe place in their lives.
Approximately 67% of our K- 5 students receive free and reduced lunch. Many of our students come from single parent families or are living with a grandparent or other relative and live in one bedroom apartments with little to no green space outside their door.
My Project
Picture yourself in a classroom of 24 (or more!), busy, kindergarten and first graders. They are seated on the floor in their invisible "seat" while listening to a story. Once they have all finally found a space to sit on the rug the story can begin. After a couple pages into the book, their focus shifts and now it's on how close their peer is to them. So now we must redirect students to do a "self-check" to make sure they are all in their own space and then repeat this process several times throughout the read aloud. With this carpet, students will be able to work on regulating their spatial awareness while in a group. It will provide a visual reference for their body and establish boundaries.
This carpet will help students by providing a space that will help them feel safe, secure and more focused.
Having this classroom rug will provide visual supports that will help build classroom community, classroom management and help us collaborate and learn together. Thank you for your consideration in our project.
