I teach at-risk second graders. My students are wonderful writers, but when it is time to share their writing, they get stage fright and the class cannot hear their stories. More than a third of my class is Hispanic, and these students speak in very quiet tones. The other two-thirds of my students come from mostly single-parent homes. These students usually do not share their writing with their parents, who often do not have the time after they get off work to listen to their stories. To enable the class to hear their wonderful stories, I would like to purchase a sound system that lets my students use their regular voice volume but amplifies the sound for the class. This would allow my students to hear each other's stories and also let them feel as if they were on stage. I am hoping that this will build their confidence and they will want to share more and write more. The other reason I would like a sound system is for me to use it during reading. My classroom is a mobile unit, and there is a lot of "white noise." When the air conditioning or heat comes on, it is very difficult to hear the students or me. Moreover, the classroom has fluorescent lights that hum, and the main-computer box for all the mobile classrooms, which has a loud constant noise, is in my classroom. These noises make it difficult for my students to hear during instruction time. The sound system will be beneficial for my students and myself. Thank you for considering my proposal.
