Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are members of Personal Financial Literacy courses. They try to hard working, realistic and have goals for the future. Throughout the course, they learn how to find and apply for a job, pay monthly bills, maintain good credit and balance their income versus expenses. For many of my students, this reality is much closer as they truly need to learn to do all of these things for themselves immediately after high school.
My students look forward to the opportunity to become independent financially as adults.
Most of my students plan to move out of their parents house and go on to the workforce and college in the very near future. They look forward to getting paid like an adult and feel as if they already have many responsibilities and serve in adult roles within their families.
Because of this reality many of my students are disengaged for a variety of reasons. Many are preoccupied with work schedules, caring for siblings and helping their families pay household bills. They want to learn to be more successful, but need the proper tools in the classroom environment to do so. They also need an environment in which they can focus.
My Project
Our classroom is a 30 seat computer lab and on a daily basis students arrive at a variety of times. Offering each student a headset at their workstation will allow students to engage and reduce distractions around them. This will also allow students to work at their own pace and allow for proper differentiation of material without stigma as student can work quietly and independently on specific simulations that will help them in their independent financial life. These factors will allow disengaged students increased opportunities for success and increased engagement because distractions, fear of failure and embarrassment are removed and increased differentiation opportunities can be added.
