Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come to school, despite dealing with the many challenges of coming from a low income/high poverty area. Some come to school hungry, with little sleep, and at times dealing with past trauma that makes it hard for them to learn.
For many of our students, my counseling sessions are the only chance they have at learning appropriate coping skills.
These sessions teach them how to identify and deal with their emotions, with hopes to find ways to appropriately handle them while in the classroom.
My Project
Our student's deal with so much adversity outside our school doors. At times, they just need a safe, calm place to learn how to express their emotions.
In addition, students come to me at lunch in order to learn social skills and positive coping skills.
Many times they do not know how to eat properly and I spend many times between groups wiping down tables and ensuring they clean their hands before eating. I spend much of my own money ensuring my room is clean and safe for them to eat and play during groups.
Kids seek my office during times of crisis and when they're feeling overwhelmed, at times just needing a sensory break. I want to give them a welcoming, safe, and hygienic place by providing a wobbly chair, fidgets, relaxing smells from the diffuser, and sanitary products as needed.
