Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you really studied music? Maybe you concentrated on the beauty and shared experience of a virtuous performance, or better yet, maybe you joined in and became a part of the musical experience. Help us stay energized and organized while we make music together.
My students love music.
My students love singing, playing instruments, and musical games. My students also have very little time in music class, so every second counts. My school has a very high poverty rate and many of my students also struggle with the additional challenge of learning English. All musical experiences foster academic success, but songs are uniquely effective because of the language embedded within them. An organized musical library and a guitar to accompany our play will make our time together more efficient and effective.
My Project
I am requesting 2 sets of book bins in order to better organize our growing classroom library. Anchoring the books we read upon the songs that we sing reinforces reading skills, while anchoring the music we hear to non-fiction texts optimizes every minute of the music class time. The only thing our library is lacking is easy to use organization. The bins and labels that I have requested will make it possible for the students and I to have the right book at our fingertips at all times.
I am also requesting 1 travel sized guitar, 3 packs of guitar strings and a guitar songbook. I play piano and guitar as part of our daily experience. We have a piano to use, but the only access we have to a guitar is when I haul my full sized rather expensive guitar from home. It has gotten to be such a favorite with my students that my guitar spends more time at school than at home. With this high demand, it's time for the music classroom to have a guitar all of it's own.
This project is important because my students are important.
My students deserve to have a well run efficient classroom where they can easily access the information they need. I would also like my students to have more access to instruments they might like to learn how to play. While instruction in music is certainly about music literacy, it is first and foremost about teaching the children. My students deserve our effort, our inspiration, and our dedication to meet their needs.
