This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students of my school strive to make each day count despite the day or night that precedes their day at school. One hundred percent of our students are African American children growing up in abject poverty. The school provides free breakfast, lunch, and dinner to all students.
Despite the trauma and individual challenges our students have faced, they show up to school with an eagerness to learn and more importantly, a trust in society and their teachers that teach them.
My Project
My kindergarten through third grade students begin their Digital Literacy class sitting on the floor at the SMART Panel, eager to learn a new skill they will use once at their computers. They sit on a cold, hard tiled floor with little complaint.
Offering my youngest students a carpet for sitting will contribute to their comfort during direct instruction as they increase their digital literacy skills.
My students learn how to stay safe online, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, animation, graphic design, and coding.
Regardless of background, all of my students leave my classroom with skills that they will apply throughout their education and life. I'm very proud of what my students accomplish each year and feel very privileged to teach them for their 9 years of kindergarten to 8th grade.
