Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school in the heart of New York. They are special needs students and English language learners, which makes learning challenging. My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds, with all of them receiving free lunch. The school's population is very ethnically diverse as well. We serve a rising number of Hispanic and African students. Needless to say, students come to school with their own unique set of struggles and successes.
One thing the students have in common, though, is their love for school and learning.
I hope to create an environment at school and at home that meets their unique needs.
My Project
Eating is one of our very basic needs. Unfortunately, this need is not always met in my school. While our school provides free or reduced price lunch to the 90% of our students who qualify due to their socioeconomic status, many students arrive too late for breakfast in school or go home knowing that there will be no dinner in the evenings. This leads to poor grades and behavioral issues. Having a snack like nuts, trail mixes and chips will allow the students to have a small bite they can rely on. These particular snacks will also help the students by providing popular snacks and not singling out that they are in need. They will have the same snacks as students who buys them in the store.
Hunger has a devastating effect on students' ability to maintain attention and effort on the cognitively demanding work they experience in middle school.
Having snack foods will allow my students to get a bite to eat to help them get through the day. They will be able to focus in class. They will also be provided a "grab bag" to take home in order to have something to eat in the evenings. These items will provide the students some dignity and not expose their plights.
