Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love technology! Due to cuts in the state budget our school has limited technology. Most of the technology that we can access is outdated. At this point in time no funds are available for new equipment. There are not enough resources to support a 21st century classroom.
My students live in a rural area of Arizona that was especially hard hit by the housing market crash, with more than one fourth of our town's homes in foreclosure.
McCartney Ranch is the largest elementary school in our district with over 700 students. 68% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We also have a large population of English Language Learners.
My Project
My students love any new technology. I have noticed that students participate more in classrooms that have SMART Boards, and all students want to solve problems just because they want a chance to use the board. SMART Boards make learning fun and keep students engaged and focused on learning. Objects move around, disappear, and flip; students can write with their fingers over text, pictures, diagrams, and websites. The Smart Board is interactive, so it encourages involvement and increases studentsstudents engagement. An increase in participation will lead to an increase in achievement. Whether it is modeling essay writing, sharing a science demonstration, designing a solution to a problem, or preparing for standardized tests, a SMART Board provides the latest technology at any student's fingertips. It allows students to interact with information at the board using electronic pens or simply touching the screen with their finger.
The long-term goal of this project is to develop elementary students who can successfully advance to middle school with a solid foundation in the STEM disciplines.
Students will have the opportunity to use technology to increase their understanding of 5th grade standards. They will take an active role in their learning, thinking, and solutions. This tool will help to prepare students with the skills that will make them capable of becoming responsible decision makers, critical thinkers, and creative problem solvers.
