Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second graders bounce into the school each morning, excited about another day of growing and learning! At the end of each day, there are choruses of children begging to stay for our After School Reading Clubs, our Enrichment Club (Crochet for a Cause), and even Saturday School Clubs! It warms my heart that my students see school as a fun and welcoming place to learn new things!
They are they most enthusiastic children!
The students in my classroom are immersed in all kinds of literature from poetry, to novels, to picture books. They love to be read to, but the highlight of the day comes it is time for our guided reading groups—and they get to read to me! These young scholars are hungry to read, and to grow stronger as readers! This year I have been amazed at their growth―and so proud of their effort!
My Project
The first time I saw my classroom I was inspired by its location right across from our school garden. I loved the fact that we could open our doors and windows, smell the scent of the flowers, and hear the birds singing. I knew that my students would be inspired by the sunny windows and cozy nooks that I would create, but one thing was missing—a magical spot to inspire my children to stretch and grow as readers—a guided reading table.
The furniture in our school has been well-loved throughout the years, and there were no extra tables to be found, so my reading groups have muddled through by meeting at our carpet or at desks.
While I do the best with what I have available, this solution doesn't lend itself to providing the level of literacy instruction that my second graders deserve. I want to be able to lean in and listening to the children as they read, and when we do they do their word work I want them to have a stable surface for writing.
My school is a Title I school, and so many of my students' families struggle to get by. Please help me send them the message that they and their education are valued!
