Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are of a generation that desperately needs to excel at science and they learn science best by completing tasks that apply to real-world problems. I am a Forensic Science teacher for 11th and 12th graders at a transfer school for low-income high-need students. My students live challenging lives and are working to overcome these challenges, graduate high school and move on to college. They have struggled to succeed and they are eager to learn through hands-on activities.

A good science class provides opportunities to experience the process of science, rather than just asking students to memorize scientific facts. However, our school is small and lacks a fully functional science lab, which makes hands-on experiments difficult.

We need a full-sized human skeleton with detachable parts to complete a forensic anthropology project where the students can act as real scientists by observing the features of the skeleton. They would use calipers to measure the bones and identify characteristics, such as gender and height. This would allow them to mirror what real scientists achieve, but in a classroom setting. They would be able to tell the skeleton’s story and see how these techniques would be used to solve mysteries though readings from “Forensic Anthropology: the Growing Science of Talking Bones”. The skeleton would also be a permanent conversation piece that could inspire discussions about numerous science topics, as well as be incorporated into other lessons about human anatomy and decomposition.

You will make it possible for my students to understand fundamental scientific concepts and apply them to real world scenarios. You could help to inspire future scientists by providing them with resources that show the fun, collaborative, and interactive side of science. This experience will also help them to develop problem-solving skills that could be used when they attend college, as well as prepare them for college-level science courses where experiments are critical to success.
