A Shelf Is a House for a Book

Help me give my students Snap Circuits, engaging books that inspire their interest. Books about science, scientists, women who've changed the world, books about animals and so much more. Adding these books to our class library will light up our book nook.

My Students

My class is comprised of twenty-two students and is a combo second/third grade classroom. There are eleven second graders and eleven third graders. As a whole, the class very much enjoys reading and has been working on their reading stamina (we're up to twenty minutes of sustained silent reading). The class gets excited about hands-on learning opportunities. This is especially true when we have math games at math centers and when students get to participate in science investigations.

What really lights a spark in the minds of my students, is finding a book that ignites their curiosity.

Books on animals, space, technology and fun facts really get them excited. It's a joy to watch their faces light up when they've found a just right book that they want to share with their classmates.

My Project

I am requesting Snap Circuits, engaging books that inspire their interests, books about science, scientists, women who've changed the world, books about animals and so much more. These materials will add significantly to my class library.

Currently the class is working on informational reports on insects, bugs and the world around them.

Our class library doesn't contain any books on these topics. Adding non-fiction, informational books, to our class library would greatly increase student excitement about the topics. Also, we have very few books in our classroom which reflect the diverse population in our community. I'd like to add to the library with books that tell stories about African-American, Black, and female leaders. I'd love to provide materials for them to continue learning about topics with which they are passionate about as well as books that reflect the members of our community.

Lastly, I want to encourage STEM projects, especially with the young girls in the class. For this reason, I added the Snap Circuits kit for students to explore.
